2020 Teacher of the Year:
Sean Bui
Sean Bui is a teacher at Cupertino High School in Cupertino, California. He currently teaches English Language Development, Level 3, as well as the popular elective, Business Law. Bui earned a bachelor of science in commerce as well as a juris doctorate in law from Santa Clara University. He later earned a teaching credential in English from San Jose State University, and a Clear Designated Subjects credential for Career Technical Education Pathways from the San Diego County Office of Education. For Bui, a 30-second scene from “The Ron Clark Story” will forever remain in his memory and serves to motivate him every day as a teacher. Ron Clark is tutoring an at-risk youth named Tayshawn. After hours of working with Tayshawn one-on-one, Tayshawn solves the problem and joyfully yells out the right answer. Clark celebrates silently in the background. Sean wants to help the future Tayshawns. Although Bui wears many hats, he takes great pride in being the English language development (ELD) Coordinator for Cupertino High School. On April 30, 1975, Vietnam fell. His family left everything behind and sought refuge in America. His father, who spoke little to no English, has always reminded him it was the support of native language speakers that helped him reach his full potential in America. Bui sees every day as an ELD Coordinator as his opportunity to pay it forward. Under his watch, English learners will reach their full potential.
