2020 Teacher of the Year:
Gail Hudson
Gail Hudson, a National Board Certified Teacher (NBCT), is a veteran educator with 32-years instructional leadership experience. An immigrant student from Belize, British Honduras, Hudson was overwhelmed as she struggled due to language barriers and cultural differences. The first in her family to attend college, Hudson recalls the one teacher who set high expectations and believed in her; encouraging her to achieve her goals. As a result, Hudson commits to be the teacher who provides all students opportunities that were not realized during her elementary school years. Building authentic, meaningful relationships and ensuring that the whole child is valued, respected, and challenged, Hudson attests to the impact an effective teacher can make in a student’s life. Promoting equitable and student-centered learning environments, she values diversity, collaboration, and innovative leadership. Currently a fifth-grade teacher at John R. Hummel Elementary with Clark County School District in Las Vegas, Nevada, Hudson trains for the district Equity and Diversity Department; facilitating at district, state, and national levels. She leads as a facilitator for Nevada National Board Professional Learning Institute: Empowering Teachers as Leaders & Learners. Hudson holds a master’s degree in administration and supervision from Loyola University, master in curriculum and instruction from DePaul University, and a bachelor of science in education from Western Illinois University. Hudson holds endorsements in literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) and a diploma in intercultural relationship from The Intercultural Development Research Institute. Additionally, Hudson is a founding member of National Board Network of Accomplish Minority Educators (NBNAME).
