2020 Teacher of the Year:
Hilary Wimmer
Hilary Wimmer is 15-year teaching veteran who teaches business at Mountain Range High School in Westminster, Colorado. Wimmer entered the profession in 2004 after spending time as a teacher recruiter in her district’s human resources department. As one of six children in a single-income family that struggled to make ends meet every day, Wimmer understands the value of becoming financially literate and seeks to instill that ethic in her students. In 2006, the principal of a soon-to-be opened high school chose Wimmer to help her build the school’s teaching corps. Since then Wimmer has developed Mountain Range’s business program and career and technical education (CTE) department. She currently leads the state’s largest DECA program and was recognized as Colorado’s 2016 DECA advisor of the year. Students talk about how “Mama Wimm” empowers them to break from their shells, become more outgoing and set and achieve ambitious goals. Wimmer leads Adams 12 School District’s CTE curriculum development and was the district’s 2019 teacher of the year. She was also named 2019 Colorado Junior Achievement Educator of the Year. She is a small business owner, helps students fundraise for charity and seeks to give her students a greater understanding of capitalism with a conscience. Wimmer graduated from the University of Colorado with a degree in marketing, received her master’s degree in educational counseling from the University of Phoenix and obtained her career and technical education certification through Colorado State University and an educational specialist degree in educational leadership from Arkansas State University.
