2019 Teacher of the Year:
Jeff Wheatcraft
Jeff Wheatcraft completed college and moved to Texas with his wife and took various jobs, from car porter to painting walls to photographer at the Tower of the Americas. When his wife became pregnant with their first son, he knew he needed a career. He interviewed for and was hired as an art teacher. The following year, he moved into a science teacher position, where he fell in love with science and had the opportunity to teach gifted students. He found clarity when working with these students, and he knew he had found his niche.
After several years, Wheatcraft decided he would leave the school he called home for an opportunity to teach at Alamo Heights Junior School. Immediately, his passion for science and engaging students was met with support as he developed increasingly more challenging course work for students. After two years, he was approached by the administration to create a STEM program, unlike any other. Drawing upon his experiences at his former middle school and the numerous jobs and hobbies he had experienced previously, he developed a program rich in engagement and authentic learning.
Wheatcraft holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art Education from Arizona State University.
