2019 Teacher of the Year:
Anna Sansone
Anna Sansone is a 7th grade science teacher at Vicenza Middle School in Vicenza, Italy. A native of northern California and an enthusiast of all things related to science and the outdoors, her students affectionately call her the 21st century Miss Frizzle because of her commitment to bringing science alive—and because her outfits always match what she and her students are studying. Sansone has 13 years of teaching experience, including assignments in Mexico, Illinois, and the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) schools in Japan, Turkey, and Italy.
Certified in science, math, social studies, Spanish, and as an Educational Technologist, Sansone has a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Science and Policy from Clark University, an Master of Arts in Secondary Science Teaching from National Louis University, an Master of Science in Instructional Design and Technology from Walden University, and is pursuing a PhD in Educational Psychology and Educational Technology from Michigan State University. Her research interest is at the intersection of technologically mediated communication and student motivation. In her classroom, she focuses on developing STEM literacy in diverse learning contexts and on fostering collaboration between schools and communities. Her goal is to help students develop an identity as scientists through collaborative learning, inquiry, and real-world applications. She organizes a local STEM fair, facilitates virtual collaboration with other science teachers in her district, serves as School Improvement Chair, coordinates a school Advisory program, and is on her local School Advisory Committee. When she is not teaching, Sansone enjoys traveling, gardening, and spending time with her husband and daughters.
