In recent years, the Ohio Department of Education has emphasized the importance of high-quality school leadership through an explicit commitment to excellence in their strategic plan along with several programs designed to elevate the role of school leaders as critical levers in school improvement. In 2016, the state agency, together with representatives from school districts and members of local Urban League affiliates, have worked to improve the preparation, professional development and mentoring model for school leaders throughout the state.
