Washington, D.C. (August 10, 2023) – Council of Chief State Schools Officer Chief Executive Officer Carissa Moffat Miller released the following statement on the U.S. Department of Education’s granting of an assessment waiver to Montana.
“We applaud the U.S. Department of Education for its leadership in granting Montana a field test waiver today and fostering innovative approaches to statewide assessment. Superintendent Elsie Arntzen and her team have conducted years of research, work and stakeholder engagement that have positioned the state to field test a new statewide assessment aligned to its goals for measuring and advancing student achievement. CCSSO deeply values statewide assessments as an important tool in our education system. We believe states should have the opportunity and flexibility to work with stakeholders to continue to improve upon these tools to ensure they are aligned to content, take only the amount of time they must, and give timely information to teachers, families and students. CCSSO looks forward to learning from the work in Montana over the next year and supporting other states as they explore strategies to modernize their education systems.”
