Washington, D.C. (January 26, 2023) – The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) today announced Missouri Commissioner Margie Vandeven will assume the role of president-elect of its Board of Directors, and Georgia Superintendent Richard Woods and Wisconsin Superintendent Jill Underly will join as new members.
Vandeven, a current board member, and Woods will take on their roles immediately. Underly will fill the board role of Colorado Commissioner Katy Anthes when she steps down in July.
“It is an honor to be selected to as CCSSO’s president-elect at such a pivotal time in public education,” Vandeven said. “State education leaders are having important conversations about how to reimagine teaching and learning, and CCSSO is a key partner in that collaboration. I look forward to working with my colleagues across the country as we strive to provide every student access to the opportunities they need on their path to success.”
Woods said he is honored to join CCSSO's Board of Directors. “As I accept this opportunity to serve, I hope to offer my perspective as a public-school educator of more than 30 years and remain focused on common-sense, student-centered solutions as we've worked to do in Georgia. I look forward to working with other state education leaders as we all seek to support students."
“I am honored to join CCSSO’s Board of Directors,” said Underly. “In my position as Wisconsin’s state superintendent, I have found the support and collaborative partnership of CCSSO and my fellow state school leaders to be invaluable. I am proud to work with these education leaders from across our country as we strive to build on our successes, learn from our challenges, and strengthen our school systems. I look forward to helping lead this work through service on the Board.”
“These chiefs bring tremendous experience and perspective to the Board of Directors, and we are grateful for their service to their colleagues,” said CCSSO Chief Executive Officer Carissa Moffat Miller. “At a time when state leaders are seeing impacts of their recovery investments and are planning sustainability and long-term recovery work, we will benefit from the thoughtful leadership of Commissioner Vandeven, and Superintendents Woods and Underly.”
