Washington, D.C. (March 13, 2020) - The Council of Chief State School Officers Executive Director Carissa Moffat Miller released the following statement regarding ongoing congressional negotiations for a broad federal response to the coronavirus outbreak:

"State education leaders greatly appreciate Congress’s attention to the needs of educators, students, and families as it considers legislation in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Educators across the country are grappling with how to provide high-quality, equitable services during a period of acute challenges.

As states prepare for and manage COVID-19 response with their districts and schools, CCSSO urges Congress to approve new funding and flexibilities in existing programs, including but not limited to school nutrition, to allow states to operate these programs effectively under unprecedented circumstances. In addition to increased flexibility, as costs continue to mount while education systems cope with this outbreak, we encourage Congress to appropriate sufficient supplemental funding to alleviate educational and social impacts in affected communities."
