Washington, D.C. (August 30, 2019) –– Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) Executive Director Carissa Moffat Miller released the following statement about New York State Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia’s departure.
“Commissioner Elia has dedicated her 45-year education career to all students and providing them with the skills and opportunities they need to succeed in school and life. In her 10 years leading one of the nation’s large school districts and then as a state education leader, she placed an emphasis on educating the whole child and worked to achieve equity for all students. Elia has also been committed to bringing parent and teacher voice into education discussions. Her experience and unwavering dedication made her a valuable voice on the CCSSO Board. We wish her well in her new endeavor, and look forward to working with the next state chief in New York to support the success of students.”

The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) is a nonpartisan, nationwide, nonprofit organization of public officials who head departments of elementary and secondary education in the states, the District of Columbia, the Department of Defense Education Activity, the Bureau of Indian Education and five U.S. extra-state jurisdictions. CCSSO provides leadership, advocacy, and technical assistance on major educational issues.
