CCSSO Announces Alaska Chief to Join Board of Directors

Washington, D.C. (August 1, 2019) ––The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) today announced that Alaska Commissioner of Education Michael Johnson has joined the Board of Directors. 

CCSSO’s Board of Directors manages the overall business affairs of the Council and is the governing body of the organization. The Board is composed of the president, the president-elect, the past president, and six directors elected by members of the CCSSO membership.   

“I am grateful for the opportunity to serve the students of Alaska and the country in this capacity,” Johnson said. “Our students and schools benefit from CCSSO’s vision, leadership, and advocacy, and I am committed to advancing goals to ensure an equitable education to every child. I admire the commitment of my fellow chiefs to lead in challenging times, and to seek opportunities for innovation to ensure that our schools meet the needs of every student they serve.” 

CCSSO Executive Director Carissa Moffat Miller said she looks forward to working with Johnson and welcomes his guidance on the CCSSO board.  

Commissioner Johnson puts student learning at the center of his work and is a fierce advocate for using technology and individualized learning to address the needs of Alaska’s students. He is committed to providing equitable access to quality teachers and learning opportunities for all students, addressing his state’s achievement gaps and working with districts, schools and families to identify strategies that will ensure every student has the opportunity to receive an excellent education every day,” Miller said.

The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) is a nonpartisan, nationwide, nonprofit organization of public officials who head departments of elementary and secondary education in the states, the District of Columbia, the Department of Defense Education Activity, Bureau of Indian Education, and five U.S. extra-state jurisdictions. CCSSO provides leadership, advocacy, and technical assistance on major educational issues. The Council seeks member consensus on major educational issues and expresses their views to civic and professional organizations, federal agencies, Congress, and the public.
