Washington, D.C. (April 26, 2019) –– The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) Executive Director Carissa Moffat Miller released the following statement in response to the departure of Rhode Island Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education Ken Wagner.
“Commissioner Wagner is a champion for opening doors of opportunity for all students in his state. During his tenure more students were exposed to career pathways, explored careers through internships and hands-on CTE classes, and challenged themselves through advanced and college coursework. He sought to empower students and communities, giving them a prominent voice in finding solutions to their educational needs, and also took a whole system approach that included improving teacher preparation through professional learning, addressing aging school facilities and supporting schools in developing high-quality instructional materials for all students. I wish him success in his next chapter.

The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) is a nonpartisan, nationwide, nonprofit organization of public officials who head departments of elementary and secondary education in the states, the District of Columbia, the Department of Defense Education Activity, Bureau of Indian Education, and five U.S. extra-state jurisdictions. CCSSO provides leadership, advocacy, and technical assistance on major educational issues.
