Washington, D.C. (July 2, 2018) –– The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) released a statement regarding the delay of the significant disproportionality rule.

“State leaders will continue to lead the way on improving processes to identify students with disabilities and avoiding disproportionate overrepresentation,” said Melissa McGrath, Chief of Staff at the Council of Chief State School Officers. “States understand the lasting effects of misidentification upon students’ academic opportunities, which is why chiefs are committed to making sure no student is misidentified in the future. While CCSSO did not call for a delay in the implementation of the federal rule on significant disproportionality, we will coordinate with the U.S. Department of Education to develop and implement policies that ensure all students receive equitable and excellent educational opportunities.”

CCSSO submitted official comments to the U.S. Department of Education in May 2018.
