Washington, D.C. (May 17, 2018) -- The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) Executive Director Carissa Moffat Miller issued the following statement on the 64th anniversary of the landmark U.S. Supreme Court Brown v. Board of Education decision.
“Today’s anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education serves as an important reminder of how far our country has come, and how far we still need to go to ensure that all students, particularly students of color, receive a high-quality, equitable education.
State education leaders are dedicated to creating a more equitable education system for each and every child. In 2017, state chiefs came together and renewed their commitment to equity through the foundational Leading for Equity report, which outlined a series of 10 commitments states can take to achieve equity in education. As they work toward these goals, chiefs are sharing those best practices and policies that have demonstrated results to improve outcomes for all students.
I am proud to see state leading on this important work, and know that chiefs will not be finished until we have an education system that provides all students access to the right resources at the right moment in their education, across race, gender, ethnicity, language, disability, sexual orientation, family background and income.”
