Washington, DC (April 10, 2018) – The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) Executive Director Carissa Moffat Miller issued the following statement on the release of reading and mathematics test scores from the 2017 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP)—also known as The Nation’s Report Card.
“Today’s release of The Nation’s Report Card confirms that there is still much work to be done to close achievement gaps and ensure that our young people are ready for success in college, careers and life.
Since 2015, states across the country have largely held steady in math and reading in the 4th and 8th grades. While several states demonstrated progress in improving student achievement and narrowing achievement gaps, it is clear we as a country must do better by all of our students, especially our lowest-performing kids.
State chiefs recognize the urgency of improving outcomes for all students, and these recent results from the Nation’s Report Card only further demonstrate this call to action. This is why state chiefs came together in 2017 to renew their commitment to create a more equitable education system for every child in their states and across the country through the Leading for Equity report.
We remain committed to following through on these commitments and taking the lead to put all our nation’s students on a path to success.”
