The National Governors Association (NGA) has joined the States Leading Campaign, a coalition of organizations working to highlight the progress underway in education in states across the country. NGA now joins the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) and other lead campaign partners that represent state education leaders – the Education Commission of the States (ECS), the National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE), and the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL).
The campaign, launched in February 2018, showcases how states are pursuing innovative policies and using best practices to best meet the needs of all students.
“States are at the forefront of efforts to improve accountability, equity, and transparency in K-12 schools through ESSA state plans,” said Washington Gov. Jay Inslee, Chair of the NGA Education and Workforce Committee. “Through States Leading, governors look forward to highlighting states where these essential elements are strong. States also look forward to aiming higher for our students by building on insights from independent peer reviews and leading policy organizations who have provided opportunities for continuous improvement as we move forward with ESSA implementation.”
“With ESSA, governors across the nation were given the tools to make their vision for education in their states a reality,” said South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard, Vice Chair of the NGA Education and Workforce Committee. “Now, with the work of ESSA implementation underway, governors are eager to work with educators in their states to usher in a new era of state-driven innovation in education. States Leading will provide a conduit for sharing of exemplary ideas for student success between states.”
Since the passage of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), states are using the flexibility under the law to work with stakeholders and create a more equitable education system for all children. Beyond ESSA, states are continuing to lead to improve early childhood education, teacher preparation, career readiness, and other important areas that impact children every day. The States Leading campaign celebrates this progress and encourages states to continue their work to provide educational equity for all students.
Through social media, weekly email updates, and events, the States Leading Campaign features innovative state policies and shares stories of the promising practices underway in states today.
