Washington, D.C. (July 12, 2017) -- Chris Minnich, executive director of the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO), released the following statement about the House proposed FY2018 appropriations draft legislation.
"While we are still waiting to see the full details of the House's proposed budget, we are pleased they chose to preserve important Title I funding that helps the most disadvantaged students. However, we remain disappointed to see such deep cuts proposed to key federal education programs, such as the elimination of Title II funding.
"State education chiefs recognize we can always improve on how state and federal funds are spent, but cutting these funds to zero wouldn't allow for an opportunity to improve how we spend those dollars and would turn our back on the commitments we have made to teachers and students. We will continue to work with members of the House and Senate on a budget that reflects the priorities of state chiefs as they work to serve all children in their states."
