Mississippi Education Chief Testifies at House Committee Hearing

Washington, D.C. (July 18, 2017) - Mississippi Superintendent of Education and Council of Chief State School Officers President-Elect Carey Wright today testified at the House Education and the Workforce Committee hearing on the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), "ESSA Implementation: Exploring State and Local Reform Efforts."

"ESSA has given Mississippi the opportunity to create a plan specifically designed for the students in our state. At the same time, the law provides guardrails to ensure our work is appropriately targeted toward improving educational opportunities and outcomes for all students and all schools," Wright said in prepared remarks.

Wright shared Mississippi's efforts to receive stakeholder input over an 18-month period to craft a plan tailored to the needs of its students, and said the state approached this process "as an opportunity to connect and build upon the goals and strategies that are embedded in the Mississippi State Board of Education's Strategic Plan, while leveraging the opportunities and expectations of ESSA."

Among the aspects of the plan that Wright finds most exciting are a Teacher Leadership Initiative to provide effective teachers with opportunities to teach students and collaboratively lead colleagues to improve their practice, an early childhood education expansion and school improvement efforts.
