The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) and one of its top leaders have been honored for ongoing commitment to diversity and inclusion. As part of that continuing work, CCSSO is proud to have re-launched a webinar series on Addressing Inequitable Systems for state education agency members.

Profiles in Diversity Journal awarded CCSSO and Chief Equity Officer Annie Holmes its 13th Annual Diversity Leader Award. This is the third consecutive year Holmes and CCSSO have received the award.

The award recognizes organizations and leaders “who work every day to expand and improve diversity, inclusion and equity in the workplace and beyond,” the publication said in a release. “Even in a field populated by organizations that care about and support diversity, inclusion and equity in the workplace, this year’s class of Diversity Leader Award recipients for 2021 clearly stands out.”

CCSSO is committed to equitable, diverse and inclusive practices in its internal work, and to assisting state education leaders in the work they lead to offer an equitable education to all students.

“It is a testament to Annie’s unwavering commitment to equity that she is recognized for this award for the third consecutive year,” said CCSSO Chief Executive Officer Carissa Moffat Miller. “I am proud to lead an organization that centers equity in all of our work.”

Ensuring students have equitable education opportunities is a top priority for CCSSO. We know that a focus on equity in education is particularly important now as communities emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic, which is impacting some students and communities disproportionately.

“I’m honored to support state education leaders and CCSSO staff, building on CCSSO’s foundational work in recent years to strive for a more just and equitable education system for all students,” Holmes said. “We cannot lose momentum in our work to provide every child an education that allows them to thrive in college, career and adult life.”

In pursuit of this work, we have resumed a webinar series on inequitable systems. CCSSO will continue its efforts to support state leaders to advance the Leading for Equity commitments through educational equity plans or other targeted initiatives to address systemic inequities in the education system.
