Washington, D.C. (May 19, 2023) — Carissa Moffat Miller, chief executive officer of the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO), released the following statement about the National Assessment Governing Board’s decision to request Congress reschedule the administration of the 2026 National Assessment of Educational Progress until 2027.
“CCSSO and state leaders believe strongly in the importance of the Nation’s Report Card and that it must remain an independent, objective measure of educational progress. For these reasons, we support the request by the National Assessment Governing Board to postpone the administration of the 2026 National Assessment of Educational Progress until 2027, returning it to the odd-numbered year schedule under which it has been administered for two decades. States will continue to administer state assessments annually to inform learning and ensure transparency for all stakeholders. We look forward to resuming the regular schedule for state-level NAEP data in 2027.”
