Washington, D.C. (January 6, 2021) – The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) Chief Executive Officer Carissa Moffat Miller released the following comment on the invasion of the U.S. Capitol by supporters of President Trump.

“The peaceful transition of power is a pillar of the American democracy that has been an example to the world for more than 200 years. The assault on the U.S. Capitol today was abhorrent and violated every norm of American governance.

As educators, we take seriously our responsibility to prepare young people for civic life and to be models of peaceful participants in a democratic society that serves all people. What we witnessed at the Capitol today was the antithesis of that ideal.

Our democracy is one of the most precious legacies we leave our children. We must protect it.”
