Washington, D.C. (June 26, 2018) – The following is a statement from Carissa Moffat Miller, Executive Director of the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO), on the Senate’s confirmation of President Donald Trump’s nominee, Frank T. Brogan, as the Assistant Secretary of Education for Elementary and Secondary Education.

“At a time when states have more authority and flexibility to improve schools and create an equitable education system for all students, we are pleased to see an individual with such deep state-level experience confirmed as a leader of the U.S. Department of Education,” Miller said. “As a former state education commissioner, Mr. Brogan understands the needs of states, whether it is implementing a statewide accountability system or continuing to work with stakeholders at the state and local levels. At CCSSO, we look forward to continuing to work with Mr. Brogan to foster collaboration between states and the federal government, to ensure students in every school district around the country graduate prepared for college and careers.”

Mr. Brogan most recently served as chancellor of Pennsylvania’s public universities and was the former Lieutenant Governor and Commissioner of Education in Florida.
