St Louis, MO (November 14, 2017) -- The Board of Directors of the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) on Monday selected a firm to conduct a national search for a new executive director, and tapped CCSSO Deputy Executive Director Carissa Miller to serve as interim executive director in the new year.

Mississippi Superintendent of Education and President-Elect of CCSSO's Board of Directors Carey Wright announced the next steps following a meeting of the Board at CCSSO's 2017 Annual Policy Forum in St. Louis, MO.

CCSSO Executive Director Chris Minnich announced in October that he is stepping down effective January 12 to become CEO of NWEA, a not-for-profit organization that creates assessments for students.

CCSSO's Board, which manages the overall business affairs of the Council and is the governing body of the organization, secured Promise 54 to support their search for CCSSO's next executive director. Miller will serve as interim executive director, effective January 2.

"As a Board, we are committed to the vision of delivering an equitable education that we set forth in CCSSO's 2017-2020 Strategic Plan and will work together to find a leader who can advance the leadership of states at this critical moment in our country," Wright said.

The Board outlined the following process to find the next executive director for the organization.

  • November 13, 2017: The Board met and secured a firm to assist in the search for a new executive director of CCSSO.
  • December 2017: The Board will meet with the search firm to determine a detailed timeline for the search process and selection.
  • January 2, 2018: CCSSO Deputy Executive Director Carissa Miller will take over as interim executive director of CCSSO. Minnich will stay on staff as senior advisor until Jan. 12.  January-February 2018: The Board will hold the first round of interviews for the executive director position.
  • March 4-6, 2018: The Board will hold the final round of interviews for the executive director position and select the new executive director of CCSSO.

The start date of the new executive director will be determined once the selection is finalized.
