The opioid crisis has received much attention in the United States. More people than ever are dying from opioid overdose; in 2016, over 42,000 people were killed by opioids. Across 52 areas in 45 states opioid overdoses increased by 30 percent from July 2016 through September 2017. In October 2017, President Trump declared the opioid crisis a public health emergency and pledged resources to address it.
