Washington, D.C. (April 2, 2018) – The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) was named one of the Best Nonprofits to Work For 2018 for a third consecutive year, according to The Nonprofit Times.

“I am proud of the culture we have created at the Council of Chief State School Officers and how we strive to improve upon it every day,” said Carissa Moffat Miller, executive director of CCSSO. “This recognition reflects the talent and passion of the people who work here, and I am excited to work alongside them to create a more equitable education system for every student across the country.”

CCSSO is among 50 nonprofit organizations that made the list in 2018. CCSSO first made the list in 2016. CCSSO ranks No. 39 this year.

The list is determined with information from the Best Companies Group, Inc., (BCG). Best Companies conducts a thorough organizational assessment through a multi-part process that includes a confidential employee survey, contacting sources outside the organization and analyzing the employer benefits and policies. Results are analyzed and categorized according to eight core focus areas:

  • Leadership and planning;
  • Corporate culture and communications;
  • Role satisfaction;
  • Work environment;
  • Relationship with supervisor;
  • Training, development and resources;
  • Pay and benefits; and,
  • Overall engagement.

This year, CCSSO particularly excelled in the following categories: Work Environment, Overall Engagement, and Pay and Benefits.

CCSSO is a nonpartisan, nationwide, nonprofit organization that represents the public officials who lead departments of elementary and secondary education in each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, the Department of Defense Education Activity, the Bureau of Indian Education and the five U.S. extra-state jurisdictions. As an organization, CCSSO is committed to ensuring that all students participating in our public education system – across all backgrounds -- graduate prepared for college, careers, and life.

Through the anonymous survey, CCSSO staff shared why they enjoy working at the organization. Here are a few examples:

“CCSSO has an amazing culture. It is transparent, supportive, collaborative, and family-friendly. While it does this, is also mission-driven and filled with staff who are focused on results for all kids.”

“CCSSO has set a clear yet bold vision and concrete goals aligned to it. Because of that, every individual and every team understands how their job contributes to our success as an organization. At the same time, while we are taking on such important issues, the organization leaders value us as individuals and want us to maintain a healthy work-life balance. I stay at CCSSO because of these reasons, and know I am a better employee for it.”
