CCSSO President Appointed to Rulemaking Committee
Washington, D.C. (March 4, 2016) - The U.S. Department of Education today announced the committee to draft proposed regulations in two areas of Title I, Part A of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).
Two members of the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) have been appointed to serve on this committee:
- Tony Evers, Wisconsin Superintendent and CCSSO President
- Marcus Cheeks, Executive Director of Federal Programs for the Mississippi Department of Education
CCSSO Deputy Executive Director Carissa Miller said, "We are pleased that Wisconsin Superintendent and CCSSO President Tony Evers has been named to the Negotiated Rulemaking Committee. He will represent chief state school officers across the country throughout this process and ensure states have the clarity, flexibility and authority they need to effectively implement the Every Student Succeeds Act."
The Negotiated Rulemaking Committee will draft proposed regulations in the following two areas of Title I, Part A of ESSA: (1) the requirement that federal funds supplement, not supplant, non-federal funds in high-need schools and (2) assessments.
The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) is a nonpartisan, nationwide, nonprofit organization of public officials who head departments of elementary and secondary education in the states, the District of Columbia, the Department of Defense Education Activity, and five U.S. extra-state jurisdictions. CCSSO provides leadership, advocacy, and technical assistance on major educational issues. The Council seeks member consensus on major educational issues and expresses their views to civic and professional organizations, federal agencies, Congress, and the public.
