09/14/11: NM Chief Outlines Reform Plans for Teacher Evaluation and School Accountability

Hanna Skandera, Secretary for the New Mexico Public Education Department testified today before the House Education and Workforce Committee about the measures used to hold schools accountable in New Mexico’s education reform efforts. Skandera’s testimony highlighted New Mexico’s education reform efforts focused on the achievement of students, the quality of teachers, and the measures used to hold schools accountable.

08/18/11: Four State Leadership Teams Receive $50,000 Grants to Expand Learning Opportunities

Teams of state legislators, state education officials, governors’ policy advisors and statewide afterschool network directors in California, Connecticut, New Jersey, and Washington each received $50,000 competitive grants to support student success by effectively integrating expanded learning opportunities into state education systems. The grants are awarded through the Supporting Student Success: The Promise of Expanded Learning Opportunities initiative, sponsored by the C.S. Mott Foundation. The grants will support each state’s plan to develop, adopt, and implement state policies that integrate expanded learning opportunities—such as afterschool, summer learning, and extended day and year programs—into state education systems.

05/02/11: Maryland High School Chemistry Teacher Named 2011 National Teacher of the Year

CCSSO announced today that Michelle Shearer, a high school chemistry teacher in Frederick, Maryland, is the 61st National Teacher of the Year. Shearer and all of the 2011 State Teachers of the Year will be recognized by President Barack Obama in a ceremony at the White House Tuesday, May 3.


The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) releases today the InTASC Model Core Teaching Standards: A Resource for State Dialogue. The standards, a state-led effort, represent clear expectations about what all teachers should know and be able to do if they are to improve achievement of our next generation of students and are intended to set the foundation for educators, states, and policymakers to achieve their education reform goals.

CCSSO Executive Director Gene Wilhoit testified today before the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Education and Workforce about federal reporting regulations and the significant state and local burdens that result. Wilhoit’s testimony focused on the importance of streamlining federal data collections; moving away from outdated models of measuring teacher quality; and improving federal program monitoring and funding audits.
